Lewes 1

Sevenoaks 2nd XI suffered a very disappointing loss to Lewes 1st XI at the weekend, effectively ending their promotion bid. They were outclassed by the undefeated league leaders and lost 2 – 0. While the result was comprehensive the game was even and tightly fought for long periods even with Sevenoaks not playing their best hockey – a small comfort for the rest of the season and next year.

Sevenoaks started brightly and looked to threaten the Lewes goal. The flamboyant Mark Baker and his strike partner Neil Smith looked to be gelling and in the midfield Adam Haines and Nick McClaren certainly gave the appearance of cohesion. However, it was Lewes that struck early. Seizing on a defensive error, the Lewes centre-forward made no mistake as he broke towards goal and finished past keeper Tim Shaw. Lewes held onto their advantage until half time but Sevenoaks were not unduly worried going into half time – perhaps aware that tactical guru Neil Morey would undoubtedly have ascertained Lewes’ weakness and would issue instructions in how to exploit it.

Regrettably, it was Lewes that scored the only goal of the second half. Another turnover by the home team in their own half led to a quick break and this time an excellent finish unlocked the Sevenoaks defence. After the goal Sevenoaks never really looked like scoring. Although they enjoyed significant amount of possession they were unable to penetrate a resilient Lewes midfield and defence. The defeat left a very bitter taste in the mouth and Sevenoaks know they have work to do.
