Sevenoaks Sixth team went down to a 2
nil defeat at Gillingham Anchorians. Much disrupted by injury
and absence, Oaks immediately came under pressure with the doughty
back line of Chris Hix, Neil Zabit and Derry Wiltshire tackling
tenaciously. Soon the home team swooped on a fluffed clearance
and shot efficiently past stranded keeper Mike Hrebien. It
would have been worse but for a series of brilliant blocks by
Hrebien, and slowly Oaks got back into the game. Elegant
sweeper John Taylor imposed himself and in midfield, the dynamic trio
of Andy Hix, Rob House and Todd Brinton began to create openings.
At
half time the game was still open. Up front, Tim Harvey, Pete
Smith and Charles Churchman were causing the opposition problems,
with only their bulky keeper averting an Oaks score. But the
visitors were still vulnerable to breaks and kept conceding shorts,
from which Anchorians finally converted with a skilful shot.
Oaks continued to press with powerful play particularly from the
young guns in the team but could not find a way through the packed
defence.
